Thoughts on Fight Club: The Movie

I had a bad experience from reading Bret Easton Ellis's masterpiece, American Psycho, and then watching the film - which isn't very good, apart from Christian Bale's force-of-nature performance, that is. I think Fight Club is a much better film than American Psycho, and it does stay faithful to the book. But, the book doesn't have a particular strong narrative, and therefore doesn't translate particularly well onto film.

The book is really about style, mood and tone, rather than plot, story and resolution - which I think are three elements which films can't always do without. What does make Fight Club a good film, rather than an average one, is the casting - which is exceptional, perhaps the best I've seen. Brad Pitt is Tyler Durden, Ed Norton is the narrator, Helena Bonham Carter is Marla Singer and Meatloaf is Robert Poulson. These actors really inhabit the roles and capture the zeitgeist of the characters.

The other thing that saves Fight Club from mediocrity is, unsurprisingly, Fincher's direction. It's all very pop culture, post modern, breaking the fourth wall, that kind of thing. This approach could have become really annoying, but it wasn't. Fincher is definitely one of the few great American directors of this era, in my opinion (behind Gus Van Sant and perhaps, Michael Mann). Final thoughts, there was really no way to translate the ending from the book onto film, that's why the ending of the film sucked, but it was entirely unavoidable. I'm sure plenty of people loved the ending, just didn't work for me. Also, I wonder if they trying to be ironic by having a tonne of product placement in a movie based on a book that is so blatantly against consumer capitalism.

Anyway, what are you thoughts on the movie version of Fight Club, did you like it, are you a fan?

Letting My Fellow Fans Dictate My Personal Life

We're having people over for a New Year's MST3K marathon. I just got an email from one of the potential party-goers asking me what MST3K is.

So, guys! If you were describing MST3K to a complete neophyte, what would you tell her? Are there any particular clips you might send along to demonstrate?

cinematic titanic question! should i go!?

cinematic titanic is going to be in my area on december 31st and i'm not sure if i should go!

has anyone here ever gone to one before? what was it like? did you get to meet with the guys and get autographs? was there a q & a? did it suck that they weren't in costume? were the jokes funny?

if i go, i'm probably going to get a crappy seat since it's so late. so if you went and sat near the back, what the experience like? still hear the guys okay?

what do you think of the price? a little over $100 for two people.

i'm really not sure if i should go and really need feedback ASAP.

thanks guys!

So, you're really going to claim Fairbreeze is your "RP property" and no one else can RP in it but your sucky, sucky guild? And then throw the freakin' mohawk grenades at us to prove your point? Of course. How classy of you.

P.S: It's brought. Not "brang".

Hey, guys?

Stop saying that your characters want to rape my character. No, really. Stop.

If you want our characters to get it on, that’s one thing. There’s no age of consent in this world, so it doesn’t matter that he’s 14. There is, however, the fact that he is totally not mentally ready for sex. Which has been expressed, both IC and OOC, on multiple occasions. But whatever. I don’t mind anyone going “Oh, he’s so cute, he and my girl should get it on.”

But this whole rape thing? There might not be an age of consent in this world, and these people might not have a law against murder. But you’d better believe that if anyone actually raped this kid, that person would have at least five very angry, very pissed off, very powerful people extracting vengeance upon your character. Not because the pup is mine, or because it's you, but because rape doesn't fly with these people. Also: joking about rape is not funny, it’s not cute, and it’s not witty. Stop.

Be Kind, Rewind (see: reREAD)

One thing that I constantly run into that would make mine and my rp partner's lives so much easier is if people would take the time to simply reread posts. Instead of coming to tag a scene and only rereading what I have posted to them, if only they would look even one post further back and reread their own post that I replied to. (I personally reread my own tag and the reply I've gotten every time[further back if I'm coming back to a scene the next day, etc], so I can keep up with a good, consistent flow in all of my scenes)

See what happens is people, especially if things get a wee bit tense, is they come back to a scene, read my tag, and give me a knee-jerk response. Well that helps no one if their off the cuff response directly contradicts something their character just said. What this does is a) makes their characters look stupid. b) makes their characters look shithouse rat insane. c) often leads to everyone thinking their characters are irrational, inconsistent bastards who make no sense whatsoever, and probably should be avoided in the future. d) my characters often think they're being lied to--and poorly at that.

The worst part is being made to feel like I'm the d-bag for having the decency to pay attention in the first place, and keep continuity within a single scene. So, if you, dear readers, find yourself in a position where you feel like you aren't sure what's going on, a scene's going out of control, etc--do yourself a favor and try re-reading before you reply. It might help.

Is there a loop hole I'm missing here?

To player who is inactive. Three strikes, and you are out.

You have been very inactive for quite a few months. Lets talk about.... 3 to 4?. You post about maybe once, or even twice a month if I'm lucky. At the beginning, you were so excited, but it seems you have faded in interest. If that's true, I'm so fine with it. Sad, but fine.

You've failed the activity check without a hiatus up, I'm sorry. I've given you opportunities to have logs, I've set up things for you to play that you've little or never replied to, and every time you blow me off just a bit more. If you're gonna be disinterested... please just tell me. We can help each other, and maybe revive the spark that looks as if it has been snuffed out.

When we finally give you the boot, please do not call me a cunt. Or a bitch. Or tell me that I'm a heartless motherfucker who you hope burns in hell. Because you think I never cared about you, or your life, or your problems, or the things I've never heard about till now because we've never ventured into that sort of conversation. And that I suck for never getting you logs or helping you RP. That me kicking you is me trying to make a circle jerk between me, the co-mod, and our two friends.

I tried really hard this time to help you out, and now I feel I have the right to bash your face in with a brick.

This is why I hate being a moderator...

Apparently, you're all so much better at RP'ing and just about everything else than the rest of us. So why can't your huge, much-more-intelligent brains figure out that it might be annoying that you go on about your bff Jill and how much you like Mudkips right in the middle of where people are Rp'ing? Seriously. You spam the screen with bullshit because it's -so- much fun to ruin the lower life form's RP scenes.

Get over yourself and die in a fire, please.

Wow, it's been a while.

Happy post-Christmas, BRPS!

I have a question, though. Why would you pair up a normally mean character with some 17 year old girl that he barely knows when the player has an "OTP" already ... and it's not them?
I mean, come on. This guy that she's playing is MEAN. She has him being overly bashful, overly embarrassed, and it's just mind-blowing to see. In a bad way.
So, how does one tell her friend to stop making him shag every single new friend he gets if the character's a fangirl? Because seeing this canon character with a new person every week (Last week, he was with a succubus! *face/palm*) is starting to make me rage.

Rage as bad as Luigi Largo.
Kthx guys. *hands out candy canes*

And before you ask, yes, the character is not supposed to be bashful.
Once in a great while is OK--I mean, hell, they're human, right? ... Well, most of the time.
It's just one of those slopped Canon/OC pairings.

(Oh, and someone else is trying their damndest to pair up my GAY character with a straight woman. She is not taking no for an answer and is setting up her character for heartbreak.
Helppppppp. DX)

wtf, WHY?

Why would someone apply to a game with a long, fully written bigass application, with an end-note disclaimer that there are a few rules of the game they don't intend to even try to follow?

WHY would you waste your time like that? I mean, I appreciate the heads up. Usually I don't get potential players flat-out telling me 'I'm going to be a problem you eventually kick out', or even hinting at it. So, you know, thanks for that.

But still, WHY? You could have saved yourself a lot of trouble if you had just shot us a line to see if we were serious about that whole 'rules' silliness.

Oi.

Let me just say, I love meta humor in my RP. However, it still needs an IC justification. When we point out that the city your character hails from doesn't exist in our universe, the correct is not "It's just a joke relax kids". Yes, as a player, I can appreciate the joke you were making. But none of our characters can, and it doesn't make me want to interact with you when you get butthurt about that.

ETA: Holy crap, seriously? Seriously, dude? You just took our OOC objections into the IC conversation where no one had mentioned anything about it. *boggles*

PICK A BLOODY NAME

So, usually I can at least read through some pretty lousy profiles, and I do mean agonizingly bad. Gaia's sort of built up my tolerance to it, and any further difficulty is usually taken care of by my good friend Jack Daniels, who makes a wonderful beverage.

But this guy...this is the first time I couldn't get past the name section of the profile before my thought process came to a screeching halt.

Your name is what? )

Best of the Decade, Netflix Edition

I recently made that list of the movies I thought of as the best of the decade, as you may have noticed.
The list ended up being around 150 movies.

These are the ones available for instant viewing on Netflix, fyi.

This is totally an exercise in self-indulgence but people are always asking if there are any good movies on Netflix instant viewing... The list of 45 movies is below the cut. )
